The evaluation (60–75 minutes)

Every in-person client starts here—the evaluation is required before we begin training together. It guides an individualized plan based on your goals, current abilities, and assessment findings. Depending on your needs, it can include:

  • Functional movement analysis
  • Walking or running gait analysis, when relevant to your goals
  • Strength and range-of-motion testing
  • Force plate assessment, when appropriate and available
  • Identifying your movement and performance priorities
  • Individualized training recommendations

Specific tests are chosen based on your goals and what's appropriate for your situation, so not every evaluation includes every assessment.

Follow-up training sessions

Ongoing sessions focus on individualized coaching, exercise progression, movement quality, strength development, and athletic performance—adjusted as you improve. When appropriate, sessions can also include hands-on manual therapy such as joint mobilization, paired with exercise-based rehab.

Return-to-play testing

For athletes coming back from injury or surgery, I offer return-to-play testing: objective strength, power, and movement testing—including force plate testing when available—to help guide a confident return to sport. Ask about testing

Movement & Performance Assessment

See how you move.
Then build the plan.

Before I program a single exercise, I want to see how you move. These assessments help me spot movement limitations and decide where to focus. They're one part of the picture, read alongside your goals, history, and strength testing, and they guide the plan rather than replace it.

01 / Movement

Functional movement analysis

Squat, hinge, lunge, single-leg, and overhead patterns show how you move, where you compensate, and which limitations matter for your goals. What I see guides exercise selection and progression.

02 / Walking

Gait analysis

A look at your walking mechanics, including stride, balance, and how each side shares the load, to identify movement impairments that may be relevant to pain or everyday function.

03 / Running

Running gait analysis

An evaluation of your running mechanics to find opportunities to move more efficiently and to guide your training, strength work, or return to running after injury.

Assessments are chosen based on your goals and needs and are rechecked as you progress, so we can see what's changing and adjust the plan.

Hands-On Care · Manual Therapy

Hands-on care,
head to toe.

As a licensed physical therapist, I use hands-on manual therapy when your assessment shows it's appropriate. It can help address joint and soft tissue restrictions and make movement more comfortable, and we follow it with exercise so those changes carry over into how you train. Depending on your needs, in-person sessions can include:

Joint mobilizationSlow, graded, hands-on movement of a joint to ease stiffness and pain and improve range of motion
Joint manipulation (HVLA)A quick, precise, small-amplitude thrust to a joint to improve movement, sometimes with an audible "pop"
Muscle energy techniques (MET)You gently contract a muscle against my resistance to help lengthen tight tissue and improve joint motion
Soft tissue mobilizationHands-on pressure and stretching of muscles and tendons to ease tension and improve tissue mobility
Trigger point therapyFocused pressure on sensitive spots in a muscle to ease tension and referred pain
Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM)Tool-assisted soft tissue work
CuppingSuction-based soft tissue technique

Techniques include, but aren't limited to, those listed above. Hands-on care supports your training. It isn't a stand-alone fix.

Individualized Coaching

More than a
workout plan.

Good coaching starts with a conversation, continues with careful observation and objective testing, and changes as you progress. My physical therapy background shapes how I assess movement, scale exercises, and manage training load.

My Approach · Rehab + Performance

Rehab and training
are the same work.

I don't see rehab and performance training as two separate things. Coming back from an injury and chasing your next personal best follow the same principles: restore how you move, rebuild capacity, and progress load with purpose. The best rehab looks like training, and the best training keeps you out of rehab.

That's why I coach athletes of all levels the same way—from weekend gym-goers to competitive athletes. The starting point changes; the approach doesn't.

Direct Current · NerveOTX

Training with the DX500

One tool I use to bridge rehab and performance is the NerveOTX DX500, an over-the-counter direct current (DC) unit. Traditional e-stim usually asks you to sit still. Direct current is designed to be used while you move, so we pair it with your exercises to improve neuromuscular activation—helping the right muscles turn on and work through real movement patterns.

I use it for movement prep and activation before training, for rebuilding muscle activation when you're returning from injury, and for strength work under stimulation. I've used it in my own training and have noticed a real difference in how my muscles activate and how I move afterward.

About Dr. Rodriguez

Built through sport.
Refined through practice.

Sports have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up playing soccer, then wrestled and trained in mixed martial arts through high school. That interest in performance, preparation, and recovery led me to athletic training, including time as a student athletic trainer at the University of Miami. I worked the 2017 season with the University of Miami football team, including the Orange Bowl, and also worked with men's basketball, track and field, women's volleyball, and women's soccer.

I went on to earn my Doctor of Physical Therapy and built my clinical career in outpatient orthopedic and sports rehabilitation. I've been a certified athletic trainer for more than seven years and a licensed physical therapist for more than four. Today I'm a clinic director and business owner, and I continue to treat patients and coach clients.

Throughout my career, I've worked with elite college and professional football players, including helping with college Pro Day training in 2022, and with high-level baseball players at the collegiate and MLB levels. Working with athletes at that level taught me how to prepare people to perform under pressure, and I bring that same standard to every client I coach.

I've always been drawn to sports, and a passion for functional anatomy, how muscles and joints work together to produce movement, led me into bodybuilding and a lasting interest in health. I've also worked as a personal trainer and strength coach, and I've competed on stage. I know what it takes to build strength, work through setbacks, and stay consistent because I've done it myself.

AR Performance brings those pieces together: a clinician's understanding of how the body moves and adapts, and a coach's focus on helping you move better, get stronger, and perform at your best.

In Their Words

What clients say.

Excerpts from client feedback, lightly edited for length.

★★★★★

"He doesn't just teach you how to work out; he teaches you how to understand your body and train with purpose."

"Training under Alex's guidance has been incredibly rewarding. He taught me so much beyond simply how much weight I can lift—mobility, strength, movement quality, and plyometrics, including how to produce and absorb force, land with control, and move efficiently. One of the biggest things I learned was how to move without compensating with other parts of my body. I've seen a significant improvement in my squat depth, my hips and adductors feel so much better, and I move so much better in the water—my swimming technique has improved tremendously."
Soumya K. — Swimmer · Performance Training Client
★★★★★
"Every session is intentional, athletic, and customized—combining mobility, strength work, and progressive loading that actually moves the needle."
Physical Therapy Client — Google Review
★★★★★
"After months away, it feels like I'm finding my way back to myself. The rehab and training helped me rebuild my confidence to do plyos again."

FAQ

Common questions.

Both. Sessions center on strength, movement, and performance training, and because I'm a licensed physical therapist, in-person sessions can also include movement and gait analysis and hands-on manual therapy, such as joint mobilization, when it's appropriate. I see rehab and training as the same work. Concierge physical therapy in the Bay Area is a proposed, separate service that isn't available to book yet—you can send an inquiry from that section.

Every client starts with an evaluation (in person) or assessment (virtual)—it's required before training sessions or packages. Use any of the request buttons or the form below to email me, and I'll reply to schedule. If you'd like to talk first, start with the free 10-minute consultation.

I accept Zelle and Venmo for all services, and cash for in-person sessions. Please cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours in advance—cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice are subject to a $50 fee.

The evaluation (in person) or assessment (virtual) is your starting point: we review your goals and how you move so your plan has a clear direction. Follow-up sessions are the ongoing coaching where we train, progress exercises, and adjust the plan as you improve.

Not at all. Training is built for people who want to move better, build strength, improve athletic performance, or return to confident training after previous setbacks.

Access to basic gym equipment (barbell, dumbbells, a rack) is ideal, but programs can be adapted around what you have available.
